Remembering Akshay Dhoke

Born on 27th July 1990 Akshay; a sharp-minded, curious, hardworking individual, possessed a sporting attitude with tremendous fighting spirit. The district-topper from Nagpur in class 10th and 12th and ranking in top 200 in JEE, he is an inspiration for many students in his community, in Nagpur and for us at IIT. He is an epitome of success, dedication, and hard work.

He represented Nagpur in State Level Cricket. A dedicated fan of Rahul Dravid, his name used to be on his lips in most of the discussions. Even his laptop password was Rahul Dravid. He represented the Hostel in cricket matches. He was also an excellent Carom player securing Bronze at the Inter-Hostel GC level.

A down to earth modest person, he never turned away from anyone who came to him with a problem and helped them out in whatever way he could. His unparalleled dedication to academics is hard to describe in a few words. A reference can be drawn to his way of attacking every problem and every assignment. Once a mundane assignment required plotting a huge pile of 30 datasets and analyzing it for information. All the other students in the course were avoiding the work, waiting for someone to do the hard work. It did not deter Dhoke and he went on to finish the job which took two full days and nights. He is the role model for dedication among all his batchmates.

Around 10 months back he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a very aggressive form of Blood Cancer. It couldn’t be detected for about 2 months and he infact gave his endsems with a running fever. He underwent two chemotherapy treatments and a Bone Marrow Transplant from his sister. However his cancer relapsed in a few months. Even in the face of adversity his firm will helped him battle the pernicious disease and come out of many serious complications. The IIT community generously helped him and his family in all possible ways. The deadly disease however relentlessly caused his condition to deteriorate and Akshay passed away on 14th September after undergoing serious complications in the last few days. He fought the extremely aggressive cancer bravely and head on.

The void created by this loss cannot be filled by anything, but he will always remain in our heart and memory.
